What the Virginia Tech Shootings Mean to Us All

                                 Eight years ago, America was jolted by a horrendous new phenomenon — the school shooting. Today school shootings have become a sad staple of American life. The latest one at Virginia Tech is the worst yet. But why is this happening? Why now? What does this mean to all Americans?

          The Bible teaches that there is a very specific reason this is happening. Speaking of the wicked, Job 27:14 says, “If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.” The tragic reality is that America’s moral and religious degeneracy has brought us to the point in which God is gradually allowing us to self-destruct — and He does this first by permitting our youth to be destroyed. Along with our country’s radical abortion policy, God is withdrawing His protection from countless numbers of American children, fulfilling this word He spoke in the book of Job.

        But is it fair for God to afflict the American people with such a severe judgment? This question cannot be answered correctly unless one understands the true nature of the specific sins that have especially angered God.  Apart from understanding the heinousness of these sins, we will self-rightously conclude that we never deserved any judgment. Given the context of these national sins, Americans in the 21st century cannot hope to avoid greater suffering, more war, and increased death tolls unless we turn away from these serious violations of God’s Law. I am not the original author of this list, as it is well known to many: 

1. The unrequited blood of the murdered multitude.This is from our nation’s failure to consistently apply the death penalty to murderers who have no right to continue living, and because of the blood of millions of aborted babies that cries to God for justice. “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made He man,” Genesis 9:6.
2.  Our nation’s descent into sexual perversion.The prevalance of homosexual behavior and overall promoscuity has always preceded the judgment of Almighty God. Our nation’s foolish attempts to rewrite sexual boundaries, as established in the Bible, has summoned all the perverts into the public square to demand their “rights.” Like the cities of Sodom and Gommorah did, this provokes the wrath of God, Jude 7.
3.   Our nation’s falling away from the true religion of the Bible. This perhaps is where the Bible speaks most harshly and often. Because Americans have turned their backs on the evangelical Protestant religion of their nation’s earliest days, God certainly must punish all the other sins more severely. It is sinning against Light and Truth when we give our ears and minds to other philosophies and religions that are contrary to what has already been revealed from the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. No nation on earth has done this and escaped utter destruction. 

           God’s message to America at this time is that unless we repent, turning to the salvation which is in Christ, we will likewise perish as the 30+ did at this university. We have no reason to believe the students at Virginia Tech were any worse than any other college students or group of Americans. If this shooting, along with the one last year upon the Amish children in Pennsylvania, reveals the broad extent of God’s anger at even common places in America, then certainly 9/11 and Katrina reveal something of the depth of that anger. God is not simply displeased with a few urban areas in New York or San Francisco.
